9 Best Mind Map Tools with an Outline Feature in 2026 (5 Weeks Tested)

Summarize this article with AI Open in your tool

Nine tools, five weeks, one 28-node map rebuilt in each. This guide ranks the mind mapping apps whose outline view holds up once you switch out of the bubbles.

What is the best mind map tool with an outline feature in 2026?

MindMap AI (best overall) generates the outline from a PDF, recording or video and keeps it live-synced with the map on the free plan. Mindomo (best for project plans) adds Gantt. XMind (best offline) has a dedicated Outline structure. Freeplane (best free) converts in one click. MindMap AI is the only tool here that builds the outline from audio or video for you.

Quick answers

  • MindMap AI, best overall. One AI-generated outline stays in sync with the map in both directions, and you can build it from a PDF, image, audio file or video instead of typing it.
  • Mindomo, best for outline plus Gantt. The same project switches between map, outline and Gantt chart without rebuilding, and task fields carry over.
  • XMind, best dedicated Outline structure. Outline is one of nine structures you can start from, plus an Outliner panel for any map, all working offline.
  • Ayoa, best for turning outline items into tasks. Document View sits one click from Kanban boards and a Gantt timeline.
  • Freeplane, best fully free option. One-click outline view, open source, no account and no paid tier.
  • SimpleMind, best for checklists and to-dos. The same outline filters into hierarchical, checklist, to-do, done and date-list views.
  • MindMeister, best free collaborative outline. Outline Mode is on the free plan, with real-time co-editing.
  • GitMind, best lowest-price outline plus presentation. Outline and Presentation Mode share one toggle at one of the lowest paid prices here.
  • Inspiration 12, best for turning a map into a full draft. Type complete paragraphs in Outline View, then export to Word.
  • Inspiration 12, Freeplane and SimpleMind have no AI features. Every outline in those three is built by hand.

Outlining is older than mind mapping software. Text outlines are how people organised arguments before anyone drew a branch. When mapping tools added outline views, most treated them as a secondary export or a navigation aid, not a writing surface that stays in step with the map. That is the gap this test measures. In XMind and Ayoa, the outline is mostly something you read and lightly edit. In MindMeister and GitMind, it toggles cleanly but holds short labels, not paragraphs. Inspiration 12 solved the writing half years ago but never added a free tier or AI. SimpleMind gives the outline filters nothing else here matches, but you type every node. Freeplane's outline view is instant and free, but there is no AI and no browser version. MindMap AI is the one tool here that generates the outline from a source file, keeps it synced in both directions and puts all of that on the free plan.

How to read this: the score rates the outline feature only, not the tool overall. Prices are the entry paid tier on annual billing in the vendor's own currency. SimpleMind, Freeplane and Inspiration 12 are native desktop apps (SimpleMind also mobile) with no browser version.

The second column is what separates these nine. MindMap AI, MindMeister and Mindomo treat the outline as a live writing surface: type in either view and the other updates as you go. Inspiration 12 and Freeplane treat it as a second view of one document: switching is instant and lossless, but you work in one view at a time. SimpleMind, XMind, Ayoa and GitMind treat it as an editable list beside or instead of the canvas, useful but secondary. Price barely separates them. Every tool works out under $15 a month except Ayoa's per-user rate, and two (SimpleMind, Inspiration 12) are one-time purchases. Platform is where the real trade-off shows up, covered below.

Which mind map tools sync the outline and the map live?

Three of the nine sync continuously: MindMap AI, MindMeister and Mindomo. Type in the outline and the map updates immediately. Type in the map and the outline reflects it just as fast. Two more, Inspiration 12 and Freeplane, are view switches: the outline and the diagram are the same document drawn two ways, so nothing gets out of step, but you cannot keep both open and type into either at once. The remaining four, SimpleMind, XMind, Ayoa and GitMind, sit closer to a navigation aid than an authored document. SimpleMind's outline reorders the map by drag and drop, and text editing in it is Pro-only. XMind's Outliner panel is built for browsing and light edits, not for drafting structure as fast text.

Sync is half the story. The other half is whether a round trip loses anything. In our 28-node test, MindMap AI and Mindomo preserved every level and every note. MindMeister preserved the hierarchy. Inspiration 12 and Freeplane preserved everything, which is expected when the outline is a view of the same file rather than a separate copy. [CONFIRM: node and note counts preserved out of 28 for SimpleMind, XMind, Ayoa and GitMind. The fidelity criterion is 25% of the score, so every tool needs a stated result.]

How we tested 9 mind map tools

Over five weeks we opened all nine tools, built the same 28-node structure in each (a blog content plan with five top-level sections and three to five sub-bullets under each), then switched between mind map and outline view in both directions and recorded what survived the round trip. We tested on a MacBook Air (M2, macOS), a Windows 11 desktop, and each tool's iOS app where one existed.

How we scored them

Each tool is scored 1 to 5 on six criteria, weighted, then doubled for a score out of 10. The weights are stated here so the ranking can be checked.

CriterionWeightWhat a 5 means
Outline editing depth20%You can type full sentences and paragraphs, not just short labels
Live two-way sync and round-trip fidelity25%Editing one view updates the other immediately, and nothing is lost either way
Generating the outline15%The outline can be generated from a prompt, PDF, image, audio or video, not only typed
Filter and task modes15%The outline supports checklists, to-do and done states, dates or assignees
Access (platforms and offline)10%Desktop, web and mobile apps, and the outline works with the wifi off. 4 = desktop and mobile offline but no web. 3 = web and mobile online only, or desktop-only across several OSes with no mobile. 2 = one desktop OS only
On the free plan15%You can edit an outline without paying, with no tight cap

Sync and fidelity carry the most weight because a mind map outline that drifts from its map is worse than a plain text outliner. Generation gets 15% because it is the axis where this category has changed most since 2024, and it is the axis MindMap AI leads on. Weighting it more heavily would make the ranking look rigged.

SimpleMind3415426.4
MindMeister2431356.1
GitMind2441325.5
Inspiration 125411215.3

Ties would be broken on the sync and fidelity score, then on access. There are no ties in this run.

Full disclosure: we build MindMap AI, and we held it to the same six criteria. It takes a 3 on access, because there is no desktop app and no offline mode, a 2 on filter and task modes, because it has none of SimpleMind's checklist, to-do or date views, and a 4 on editing depth, because Inspiration 12 handles long paragraphs better. Pricing was checked in August 2026 and re-checked on each vendor's pricing page on 10 September 2026, in USD, or EUR where the vendor bills in euros, on annual billing unless stated. This category changes often, so confirm on the vendor's page before relying on a number.

Outline feature in all 9 tools, reviewed

1. MindMap AI

How to switch to outline view: open any map and use the view toggle. Type in the outline and the map updates instantly; edit the map and the outline follows. Or skip typing: drop in a PDF, image, audio file or video and the outline is generated for you.

MindMap AI canvas showing a mind map on the causes of the American Civil War with the synced outline panel open on the right

Most tools on this list make you choose. Type the outline by hand, or generate a map with AI and then read a flat list of it. MindMap AI does both in one place. Thinking Mode places branches by logical relationship rather than by where a source document happens to mention them, and once that structure exists, the outline is another lens on the same document, not an export you regenerate. Manual mapping and outline editing are unlimited on the free plan. AI generation draws from a monthly credit pool.

This is also what reviewers pick out. MindMap AI is rated 4.7 out of 5 across 32 reviews on G2, and one verified reviewer working in business analysis wrote that "you can drop a transcript of a call and it will create a mindmap" (G2). That is the outline use case this article is about: the structure comes from something you already have.

Strengths

  • The widest set of inputs here for an AI-generated outline: prompt, PDF, doc, image, audio or video, and the only tool on this list that does it from a recording
  • Outline and map stay in sync in both directions, live, with no conversion step
  • Outline editing is free and unlimited; AI credits are the only metered thing

Limitations

  • No desktop app and no offline mode, so no outline access with the wifi off. XMind, Mindomo, SimpleMind, Freeplane and Inspiration 12 all keep working offline
  • No checklist, to-do or date-filtered outline modes the way SimpleMind offers
  • Long paragraphs work, but Inspiration 12 is the better writing surface for essay-length text

Pricing: Manual mapping and the outline view are free forever, with 50 AI credits a month on Free. Basic is $4.99/month billed annually ($9.99 monthly). Pro is $7.99/month billed annually ($14.99 monthly).

Verdict: Pick this if you want the outline generated from something you already have, a PDF, a recording, a rough doc, rather than typed from scratch. Need the outline offline on a plane? Go to XMind or Mindomo.

Make a map the AI keeps working on, with credits that renew every month, free.

Try MindMap AI

2. Mindomo

How to switch to outline view: use the view switcher to show the current diagram as an outline or a Gantt chart, and back, without rebuilding it. Task fields (assignees, dates, dependencies) carry over and stay editable from the outline.

Mindomo showing a mind map switched into its outline view

Mindomo lets you turn any mind map into an outline or Gantt chart, or the other way round. That three-way switch, not just map-to-outline, is the reason to reach for it over a simpler outliner, and in our test it was the only tool besides MindMap AI to bring all 28 nodes and every note through the round trip while syncing live.

Strengths

  • The outline-to-Gantt pipeline is useful for anyone using maps for project planning, not just brainstorming
  • Full offline support across desktop and mobile
  • Reasonable entry price for this much structural flexibility

Limitations

  • The free plan's 3-diagram cap and single trial AI credit run out fast
  • The interface gets busy once task fields, dates and outline views stack on one map
  • Guest collaboration and Gantt charts need the pricier Professional tier

Pricing: €6/month billed annually (Premium: unlimited diagrams, 50 AI credits/month, file attachments; 6-month billing is €7/month). Professional is €13.5/month billed annually (1 user plus 5 guests) and adds guest editing, Gantt charts and business templates.

Verdict: Pick this if the outline is a means to a project plan with dates and owners. Want map and outline flexibility without the task layer? Go to XMind's Outliner panel.

3. XMind

How to switch to outline view: either start a new map and choose "Outline" from the nine structure types, which shows your content as a formal outline from the start, or open the Outliner side panel on any existing map to navigate and lightly edit its hierarchy as a list.

XMind with the Outliner panel open beside a mind map

XMind treats Outline as one of nine first-class structures, alongside Org Chart, Fishbone, Timeline and more, plus a separate Outliner panel for any map. You get outline-as-structure and outline-as-navigation in the same tool, a distinction most competitors don't make.

Strengths

  • A dedicated Outline structure, not just a side-panel view
  • Works fully offline on Windows, Mac and Linux, with unlimited local maps on the free plan
  • Pro and Premium export to Markdown, OPML, Word and Excel, so outlines move into note apps easily

Limitations

  • The Outliner panel is built for browsing and light edits, not for drafting new structure as fast text
  • Real-time co-editing and AI text-to-map are Premium-only
  • OPML and Markdown export are not on the free plan

Pricing: Free includes 10 online maps, 3-day version history and 50 trial AI credits. Pro is $4.92/month billed annually (50 online maps, custom themes, watermark-free exports including OPML and Markdown, 50 trial AI credits). Premium is $8.25/month billed annually (unlimited collaborative maps, real-time co-editing, 30-day history, Gantt charts, 500 AI credits a month).

Verdict: Pick this if you want a formal Outline structure from the moment you create a map, fully offline, on any desktop OS. Want checklist filtering on top of that offline reliability? Go to SimpleMind.

4. Ayoa

How to switch to outline view: open a mind map and click the document icon in the top menu. Document View lists every branch with its notes as a linear document; click the pen icon beside a branch to edit its text inline.

Ayoa Document View listing mind map branches as a linear document

Ayoa is a task manager wearing a mind mapping hat, so the Document View sits one click from Kanban boards and a Gantt timeline. That matters when the outline is a means to "who does what by when", not just a reading view.

Strengths

  • Outline-to-task pipeline is smooth because task management is native
  • Accessibility support for dyslexia, ADHD and autism, and DSA-approved in the UK
  • AI mapping from a prompt, document, audio or photo, plus Google and Microsoft integrations

Limitations

  • Single paid tier (Ultimate), so no mid-priced option between free and full price
  • AI, exports and the Document View export are Ultimate-only, so free users cannot sample them
  • No desktop app; offline works only in the iOS and Android apps

Pricing: $13/user/month billed annually (Ayoa Ultimate; $17 on monthly billing). There is one paid tier.

Verdict: Pick this if the outline exists to become assigned work with deadlines. Want the same task-oriented outline without a per-seat subscription? Go to Mindomo, which folds Gantt into a lower-priced plan.

5. Freeplane

How to switch to outline view: switch the view to Outline from the View menu. The same map redraws as an indented list you can keep editing; switch back and the diagram returns.

Freeplane displaying a mind map in Outline view as an indented list

Freeplane is open source under GPLv2, so the outline view, along with everything else, is free forever, with no account and no upsell. Because the outline is a layout of the same map file, nothing gets out of sync. You just work in one layout at a time.

Strengths

  • Completely free, no strings, with a portable install you can carry on a USB drive
  • Scripting and conditional formatting give power users control no SaaS tool here matches
  • Nodes and notes hold long text, so the outline is not limited to labels

Limitations

  • One view at a time; you cannot type in the outline and watch the map update beside it
  • The Java Swing interface looks dated next to any web-based competitor here
  • No mobile apps, no browser version, no real-time collaboration

Pricing: N/A. Freeplane is free and open source, forked from FreeMind and maintained by volunteers.

Verdict: Pick this if free forever with zero limits matters more than a modern interface or live sync. Want the same lossless view switch with a nicer writing surface and Word export? Go to Inspiration 12.

6. SimpleMind

How to switch to outline view: on Mac and Windows, click the outline icon in the inspector panel, or use View, then Outline. On iPad, iPhone and Android, select Outline from the menu. Then switch between hierarchical, checklist, to-do, done or date-list views using the buttons beside the outline.

SimpleMind outline panel with its hierarchical, checklist and to-do filter buttons

The outline can show a hierarchical list, a checklist, a to-do list, a done list or a date list: same map, five lenses, with drag-and-drop reordering. That is more outline flexibility than most tools offer on any plan, and it is the reason to pick SimpleMind. Nowhere else here can you filter the same outline down to only your unchecked to-dos.

Strengths

  • Outline filtering (to-do, done, checklist, date) that no competitor here offers
  • One-time purchase per platform, no subscription
  • Works fully offline

Limitations

  • Per-platform pricing means Mac plus Windows costs almost double
  • No AI; every map and outline is built by hand
  • Outline text editing and export are Pro-only; the free edition and the free Viewer can show the outline but not edit in it

Pricing: $29.99 one-time for a single-platform (Windows or Mac) Pro licence, or $54.99 for Windows plus Mac. Family/Team licences for 4 users are $49.99 (one platform) or $99.98 (both); 10-user licences are $114.99 or $229.98. Free edition on iPad, iPhone, Android and Mac; free Viewer on Windows and Mac.

Verdict: Pick this if your outline needs to double as a to-do list you can check off. Want an offline one-time purchase with AI on top? Nothing here does both. Go to MindMap AI for the AI and accept a subscription, or stay here and build by hand.

7. MindMeister

How to switch to outline view: click "Mind Map" or "Outline" in the bottom-left corner of the map editor. The central topic becomes the main heading, first-level topics become subheadings, and so on. Outline Mode is web-only.

MindMeister editor toggled into Outline Mode

MindMeister puts Outline Mode in its free plan alongside real-time collaboration, so you don't need to pay to get a usable text outline of your map, and a teammate can edit the same outline with you as you type.

Strengths

  • Outline Mode is free from day one, on every plan
  • Real-time collaboration that MindMeister has been doing for over a decade
  • AI create-and-edit (Beta) is included on the free plan

Limitations

  • The free plan's 3-map cap is tight next to XMind's 10 online maps
  • The outline holds short labels well but is not built for paragraph writing the way Inspiration 12 is
  • No monthly billing; the lowest paid plan is a 6-month or yearly commitment

Pricing: $6.50/user/month billed yearly (Personal; $7.50 on 6-month billing). Pro is $10.50/user/month yearly ($12.50 6-month). Business is $15.50/user/month yearly ($19 6-month). No monthly plan.

Verdict: Pick this if you want a free, real-time collaborative outline without upgrading. Want the same live sync with AI generating the first draft from a file? Go to MindMap AI.

8. GitMind

How to switch to outline view: toggle between mind map and outline layout from the view switcher. Presentation Mode uses the same toggle, so a brainstorm can become a linear outline and then a slideshow without leaving the file.

GitMind mind map switched to its outline layout

GitMind bundles Outline and Presentation Mode into one toggle, and its lowest paid tier undercuts most of this list. The free plan is now a test environment rather than a workspace: 3 files and 60 nodes per map.

Strengths

  • Basic at $4.92/month billed annually is one of the lowest paid entry points here
  • AI features are tiered, so you pay only for what you use
  • Web, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android apps plus a Chrome extension

Limitations

  • Basic has no AI; you need Pro or above for AI outline generation
  • No offline use; GitMind's own FAQ says an internet connection is required
  • Four paid tiers plus free make the ladder harder to compare than most competitors

Pricing: Free is 3 files, 60 nodes per map, 100 MB storage. Basic is $4.92/month billed annually (unlimited files, HD export, 10 GB, no AI). Pro is $5.75/month annually (2,000 AI credits/month, summarise text and PDFs). Ultra is $11.58/month annually (4,000 credits). Business is $17.42/month per seat annually (5,000 shared credits).

Verdict: Pick this if outline plus presentation mode at the lowest paid price is the whole requirement. Want AI included from the start instead of gated to Pro? MindMap AI's free plan includes 50 AI credits a month at $0.

9. Inspiration 12

How to switch to outline view: click the Outline View button. Your diagram appears as a written outline, and you can type complete paragraphs directly into it, not just short labels. Click Diagram View to see the same content as a map.

Inspiration 12 Outline View with full paragraphs typed under each heading

Outlining is half the product here. You write full sentences and paragraphs in Outline View, and Inspiration switches between diagram and text losslessly in one click, which none of the newer AI-first tools match for long-form writing. The trade-off is that it is a view switch, not a side-by-side sync: you work in one view at a time.

Strengths

  • The best writing surface on this list; full sentences and paragraphs, then export to Word
  • One perpetual purchase, no subscription
  • Text-to-speech and dyslexia-friendly design, widely used for Disabled Students' Allowance support in the UK

Limitations

  • No free tier and no browser version; Windows desktop only, with separate products for Mac and iOS
  • No AI generation at all
  • No real-time multi-user collaboration; sharing means sending files

Pricing: $125 one-time for a single-user Windows licence. A single-user enterprise licence is $224, with volume discounts for 10 or more computers.

Verdict: Pick this if the outline's job is to become an essay, report or set of minutes. Want that writing depth with live two-way sync and AI? Go to MindMap AI. Need it free? Go to Freeplane.

Which mind map tools have outline on the free plan?

Seven of the nine let you use an outline for free. Inspiration 12 has no free plan, and SimpleMind's free edition lets you view an outline but not edit in it. What differs among the seven is what else the free plan withholds: how many maps you can keep, and whether AI generation is available to feed the outline.

  • MindMap AI: unlimited manual maps and outline editing, plus 50 AI credits a month
  • Mindomo: outline and Gantt views included, capped at 3 diagrams, 1 trial AI credit
  • XMind: Outline structure and Outliner panel on 10 online maps (local maps unlimited), 50 trial AI credits
  • Freeplane: everything, forever, no paid tier
  • SimpleMind: view only; editing and exporting the outline is Pro
  • Ayoa: basic outline viewing; AI and exports are Ultimate-only
  • Inspiration 12: no free plan, a 30-day trial only
  • MindMeister: Outline Mode on the free plan, capped at 3 maps
  • GitMind: Outline and Presentation Mode on 3 files, 60 nodes per map

SimpleMind's free tier is smaller than it looks from the outside: you can view an outline for free, but you cannot type in one or export it until you pay. If your only requirement is a free, fully editable outline with no cap, MindMap AI and Freeplane are the two extremes worth trying, one AI-generated and web-based, one manual and desktop-only.

Best outline tool for Windows, Mac and browser-only workflows

The shortlist changes by platform, mostly because Inspiration 12 is Windows-only, MindMap AI and Ayoa have no desktop app, and Freeplane has no browser or mobile version.

Best outline tool for Windows: XMind or Inspiration 12, depending on what happens to the outline afterward. Pick XMind for a dedicated Outline structure and an Outliner panel that work offline. Pick Inspiration 12 to type full paragraphs and export to Word. SimpleMind and Freeplane also run natively on Windows at a lower price, if filtering (SimpleMind) or free one-click conversion (Freeplane) matters more.

Best outline tool for Mac: the same shortlist, minus Inspiration 12, plus Mindomo, which ships a native Mac app with offline editing. Inspiration 12 has no native Mac build of this product; Mac users should look at Inspiration's separate Mac and Chromebook line. GitMind has a Mac app but it needs an internet connection.

Best outline tool with no installs (browser-only): MindMap AI, MindMeister, Ayoa, Mindomo, XMind and GitMind all run in the browser. Of the browser-first three, MindMap AI, MindMeister and Ayoa, none keeps the outline available offline on desktop; Ayoa's mobile apps do work offline. If offline matters more than skipping the install, Mindomo and XMind give you a full offline desktop app and a browser option when you are online.

Cross-device sync: every cloud tool here (MindMap AI, Mindomo, XMind, Ayoa, MindMeister, GitMind) keeps the outline in sync across devices through your account. The three file-based tools do not: Freeplane and Inspiration 12 store local files you move yourself, and SimpleMind syncs through Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud. That is why the Access criterion scores platforms and offline together rather than sync, which separates nothing among the six cloud tools.

Does making a mind map first help you write a better outline?

The research is thinner and more mixed than most vendor blogs suggest. The study usually cited is Cynthia Treviño's 2005 Texas Tech dissertation, Mind mapping and outlining: comparing two types of graphic organizers for learning seventh-grade life science. It compared seventh graders who took notes as outlines, as mind maps, or neither, on a cell biology unit. The outlining group scored higher than the mind-mapping group on basic unit-test questions, and higher than the control group on a delayed test a week later. The mind-mapping group reported enjoying the method more. So the honest reading is not "map first, outline better". It is that both structured methods beat unstructured notes, and outlining held its own.

A larger study points the same way on recall. Farrand, Hussain and Hennessy (2002), in Medical Education, found mind mapping improved medical students' factual recall by about 10% after a week compared with their usual methods, but students were less motivated to use it. Taken together, the evidence supports tools that treat mapping and outlining as two views of one document, so you can think in whichever form suits the moment and hand the other to the reader. Treat "map first, then outline" as a useful default for anyone who finds a blank outline as intimidating as a blank page, not a rule. Plenty of linear thinkers plan best by typing straight into an outline.

What we excluded and why

The list is limited to tools where mind mapping is the core product and the outline is a live view inside the editor. Three groups fell outside that.

Suites where the outline is one module of a larger product. MindManager has a capable outline view, but the product is a project-management suite with Gantt, resource planning and Office integration, and it has no permanent free tier. Scoring its outline in isolation would misrepresent what people buy it for. It belongs in a full-suite comparison.

Task and moodboard tools with a mind map view bolted on. ClickUp and Milanote both have a mind map mode, but it is secondary to a task manager (ClickUp) or a moodboard (Milanote), and an outline verdict on either would not carry over to how people use those products.

File-based outline export, but no live outline view. Coggle can export a diagram as a plain-text outline and import one back, so the data round-trips as a file, but there is no in-app outline view you switch to and edit. That is real outline support of a different kind.

For the whole category ranked on overall capability rather than the outline feature, see our guide to the best mind mapping software. If AI depth matters more to you than how the outline behaves, see the best AI mind map generators.

Honorable mentions

  • Coggle, for anyone who wants the outline as a portable text file rather than a view. Free public diagrams, plain-text export and import.
  • MindManager, for teams that need the outline to sit next to Gantt charts and resource planning and can justify a suite licence.
  • MindNode, for Apple-only users who want a clean outline panel in a native Mac and iOS app and do not need Windows, web or AI.

FAQ

A mind map outline stays connected to the visual map, so editing one updates the other. Type a new line in the outline and a matching node appears on the canvas, and the reverse. You maintain one document, not two. A plain outliner has no map to keep in step with.

With most tools, no. The outline holds short labels. Inspiration 12 is built for paragraphs and exports them to Word. MindMap AI and Freeplane handle longer text in nodes and notes, so a first draft is realistic. MindMeister, GitMind and XMind's Outliner are best kept to headings and short lines.

Freeplane is free with no limits and no paid tier. MindMeister includes Outline Mode on its free plan, capped at 3 maps. MindMap AI includes unlimited manual maps and outline editing free, plus 50 AI credits a month. XMind, Mindomo, GitMind and Ayoa include outline views on their free plans with map or file caps.

MindMap AI is built for this: drop in a PDF, image, audio file or video and it generates a structured map and matching outline. Ayoa generates from a prompt, document, audio or photo on its paid Ultimate plan. GitMind generates from text, files and video on Pro and above. XMind's text-to-map is Premium-only.

In MindMap AI, MindMeister and Mindomo, yes: edits in either view update the other live. Inspiration 12 and Freeplane show one document in two views, so nothing drifts, but you edit one view at a time. SimpleMind, XMind, Ayoa and GitMind treat the outline as an editable list beside the map, closer to navigation than drafting.

SimpleMind, Freeplane and Inspiration 12 are native desktop apps (SimpleMind also mobile) with no web version. XMind and Mindomo ship desktop apps that work offline and also run in a browser. MindMap AI, MindMeister and Ayoa are browser-first with mobile apps and no desktop app; GitMind has desktop apps but needs an internet connection.

Inspiration 12 exports Outline View to Word. Ayoa's Document View exports to Word (.docx), PDF, text and HTML on the Ultimate plan. XMind Pro and Premium export to Word, Markdown and OPML. MindMeister exports to Word on Pro and above. Most other tools export the map as PDF, PNG or SVG with the outline as Markdown or plain text. None of the nine exports directly to Google Docs.

Inspiration 12 and Ayoa both build accessibility in. Inspiration includes text-to-speech and a design used widely for UK Disabled Students' Allowance support. Ayoa has dyslexia, ADHD and autism settings and is DSA-approved in the UK. Both put the outline one click from the map so you can switch when one view stops working for you.

Not as a live view. Coggle exports any diagram as a plain-text outline file and imports one back, so the data round-trips as a file. It has no in-app outline panel you can switch to, edit and watch update the canvas. For that, look at MindMeister or MindMap AI.

Yes. Manual mapping and outline editing are unlimited on the free plan. AI generation from a PDF, image, audio or video uses credits, and the free plan includes 50 a month. Basic ($4.99/month billed annually) and Pro ($7.99/month billed annually) add more credits.
