Why switch from Atlas Workspace for mind mapping?
Atlas Workspace is not a mind mapping tool. What it makes instead is a Knowledge Map. Upload a document and Atlas pulls the ideas out as notes, sorts them into themed groups, and joins them with arrows labelled to say how each part relates to the next. It does that well. It is still not a mind map.
A mind map radiates from one central topic in a hierarchy, and the value is in building that hierarchy, because it forces you to decide what belongs under what. A diagram that links many ideas in a network and labels the relationships between them is a different instrument for a different job, and that is the one Atlas builds.
In practice it means a Knowledge Map has no levels. You can make your own groups, shift a note from one to another, edit its text, add or delete arrows. What you cannot do is put one note under another, so nothing has anything beneath it and there is no branch to collapse. The AI will not regroup the map for you either, and it works one document at a time, so a topic you have assembled from four papers and a lecture stays four papers and a lecture.

No. A mind map starts with one idea at the centre and branches outward, every node hanging off a parent, and Atlas has nothing of the kind. Its Knowledge Map breaks the source into notes, groups them by theme and labels the arrows between them, but nothing sits under anything else. The Semantic Map is a project-level view of how documents relate. There are no parent and child nodes, so nothing nests, nothing reorders and nothing folds away. You can move the notes, edit their text and recolour them, but the AI will not rearrange them, and a Knowledge Map only ever covers one source at a time.
NotebookLM, if you want the citations. Its free tier covers 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, answers are grounded and cited, and it generates a mind map from those sources at no cost.
