How MindMap AI Pricing Works: Free, Monthly, Annual, Lifetime, and Team

Most people use MindMap AI in two ways: some days they build a map by hand, node by node, and other days they drop in a recording or a long PDF and let the AI draw the first draft. Only one of those runs on AI, and that difference is the basis of how MindMap AI is priced. It was not always so. When we launched in March 2024 there were no plans and no prices, and for eight months everything, including the AI, was free. When we designed the first paid plans in late 2024, the hardest question was not how much to charge but what to charge for, and the answer still holds: the mind mapping is free, and the AI is what you pay for. This is how we got there, told by the team that built it. Current plans live on the pricing page, and every date comes from our public version history.

When did MindMap AI launch, and was it free?

MindMap AI launched in March 2024, and for its first eight months it was completely free, AI included. We wanted the first version judged on what it did, not on what it cost. The idea behind MindMap AI was specific: an AI that keeps working on a map with you, expanding a branch here, summarising one there, rather than a generator that produces a picture and stops. That is a claim you can only test by watching people use it for real. Free access got the product into thousands of hands quickly and let us see where the idea held up under actual work.

The first release did one thing well. You typed a sentence and the AI drew a mind map you could save and download. Over the following months we built out the rest of the plan: files as inputs, because the ideas people most need to organise live in PDFs and recordings rather than in a prompt box; full hand editing, so an AI-drawn map became a starting point rather than a finished object; and AI actions that work on an existing map instead of replacing it. Each step confirmed the idea and showed us what to sharpen next.

None of this was cheap. When someone drops an hour of lecture audio into MindMap AI, an AI provider charges us to transcribe every minute, read every word, and write the map. For eight months we paid that for everyone, because what we learned about how people work was worth more than early revenue. By late 2024 the product could stand on its own. It was time for the business to do the same.

When did MindMap AI introduce paid plans, and why?

MindMap AI introduced paid plans in November 2024, because a product that people rely on every day needs a business that can carry the cost of running it. AI has a real cost per request. A subscription model that covers it is what lets the product exist in five years, not just next month.

The question we spent our time on was where to draw the line. The common approach is to put the whole product behind a plan. We did not. Many people use MindMap AI mainly as an editor, building maps by hand and calling on the AI now and then, and we did not want them paying for AI they rarely touched. The AI is the part with a real cost behind it, so the AI is the part that should carry the price.

So the line went around the AI. Three commitments defined the plans then and still hold now:

  • Mind mapping by hand is free, with no limits. The full editor, unlimited projects, unlimited storage, for anyone, with no time limit.
  • AI uses credits. The more the AI has to read and write for a request, the more credits that request uses. Every plan, including free, comes with AI credits, so everyone can use the AI.
  • Paid plans give you more AI. More credits each month, and larger files to work from.

The first version had two plans: free and paid. Within weeks we added a third in between, at a price that made sense for students, who make up most of our users. Around the same time we added credit add-ons, so anyone who runs low before the month ends can buy a small amount of extra credits instead of waiting or moving to a bigger plan. Both had been part of the plan from the start; launching first showed us which one people needed sooner.

How did we make AI credits fair?

Credits work on a simple idea: you pay for what the AI does for you, and nothing else. Getting there took a few changes after launch.

We made retries free, so if the AI gives you a poor answer you can ask again without paying twice. We changed how a request is counted so that only what you send and what the AI returns are charged, not the earlier messages in the conversation. We started showing the credits used right next to each AI reply, so you always know what something cost the moment it happens. And later we improved the way credits are calculated, so the same map now uses fewer credits than it did at launch.

Editing your map by hand and undoing a change have never used credits. People ask us about that more than anything else, so it is worth saying clearly.

How did the ways to pay grow?

MindMap AI began with monthly billing. Over the following fifteen months we added three more ways to pay, each built for a way of working that a monthly allowance handles badly.

Annual

Annual billing is for people who use MindMap AI regularly and know they will keep doing so. It is the same product as monthly, billed once a year at a lower price. You can upgrade, or move from monthly to annual, from your account whenever you like.

Lifetime

The lifetime option, added in January 2025, is built for uneven usage. Academic work runs in cycles: four or five intense weeks mapping a literature review or an entire course, then a quiet stretch until the next one. A monthly allowance wastes the quiet months. Lifetime gives one pool of credits that never expires, paid for once and used as quickly or as slowly as you like, with every future update included. It also suits people who would simply rather pay once than hold another subscription. If the pool runs out years later, you add more.

Team

Team pricing, launched in February 2026, is built for groups that want one bill: a tutor and a class, a research group, a small company. Each seat is a full account with its own credits, one admin manages seats and billing, and members share projects with each other. It mirrors the individual plans, monthly or annual, and larger organisations can write to us for a custom arrangement.

What did we give back along the way?

Charging for AI paid the bills. It did not change who we build for. Most people who use MindMap AI are students and educators, and from the start we have built ways to make the price smaller or remove it altogether.

Verified students get a large discount through the student discount page, because price should never be the reason a student stops. Anyone can earn AI credits by bringing a friend or sharing a map. Importing maps from other mind mapping tools is free on every tier and uses no credits, because work you have already done elsewhere should never be a reason to pay us. And the money-back guarantee now runs for a week rather than a day, since a day is long enough to find a bug but a week is long enough to decide whether you want the product.

What has never changed?

A lot has changed since November 2024. We have added plans, renamed them, and adjusted what they cost, and we will do all of that again. The one thing we have not touched, and do not intend to, is the idea the first plans were built on: mind mapping is free, and you pay only for the AI you use. Every request shows what it cost the moment it comes back, so there is never a surprise.

That is also the simplest way to read the pricing page. Before you compare anything, ask yourself how much AI you actually expect to use. If the honest answer is a little, stay on the free plan. It is not a trial; it is the full editor with a small amount of AI included. If you want to see whether AI earns a regular place in your week, start on monthly, and move to annual once it has. If you use it heavily some months and hardly at all in others, or you would simply rather pay once and be done, lifetime was made for you. And if there are several of you who want one bill, team.

Whatever you choose, the part of MindMap AI you use to think will stay free. The dated record of everything else is in our version history.

FAQ

MindMap AI introduced paid plans in November 2024. Until then everything was free. The plans were built on one idea: only AI usage is paid for, and mind mapping by hand stays free and unlimited. A middle tier and credit add-ons followed within weeks, a lifetime option in January 2025, and team plans in February 2026. The full dated record is in the public version history.

Yes, and it always has been. Building, editing, and saving mind maps by hand in MindMap AI has never cost anything and has never been limited, on any plan, before or after paid plans were introduced. Every plan, including free, also includes AI credits. Paid plans give more credits and allow larger files. Editing a map by hand and undoing a change do not use credits at all.

Because every AI request has a real cost behind it, and credits match what you pay to what you use. Generating a map from a document or recording means paying an AI provider to read the content and write the map. Credits rise with how much the AI has to read and write, so a short prompt costs little and a long video costs more. Each reply shows the credits it used, and retries are free.

Because many people use MindMap AI heavily for a few weeks and then very little, and a monthly allowance handles that badly. Academic work in particular runs in cycles: a few intense weeks mapping a literature review or a course, then a quiet stretch. A subscription wastes the quiet months. The lifetime plan, added in January 2025, gives one pool of credits that never expires, paid for once, with future updates included. It also suits anyone who prefers not to hold a subscription.

The payment options have grown while the basic idea has stayed the same. MindMap AI launched free in March 2024, added monthly plans in November 2024, then a middle tier and credit add-ons, a lifetime plan in January 2025, and team plans in February 2026. Along the way retries became free, credits were shown on every reply, and the calculation was made more efficient. Throughout, mind mapping by hand has stayed free and only AI usage is charged.
